University honours Paxman and Birt

paxman Jeremy Paxman has won a number of awards for his work


BBC television presenter Jeremy Paxman was receiving an honorary degree from Bradford University on Friday.

The Newsnight and University Challenge presenter, who was born in Leeds, was being awarded a doctorate for his work as a presenter and journalist.

Actor Peter Sallis, who plays Clegg in the BBC programme Last of the Summer Wine, was also collecting an honorary degree from the university on Friday.

BBC Director General Sir John Birt will receive an honorary doctorate on Saturday for his contributions to broadcasting.

A university spokeswoman said: "We always look to honour people who have achieved eminence in their own field.

"The students find it wonderful to have an inspiration to look up to at the ceremonies."
