Minister names and acclaims schools

Schools under the microscope: close inspection has revealed vast improvements.

School Standards minister Stephen Byers has "named and acclaimed" more than 70 schools which have turned failure into success.

Each of the schools, once condemned by inspectors, has now improved sufficiently to be removed over the last three years from close supervision.

Representatives from each of the schools were invited to a party given by Mr Byers on the terrace of the House of Commons.

Name and shame

Mr Byers provoked controversy shortly after the election by "naming and shaming" 18 schools which were failing to improve sufficiently quickly.

On Tuesday he said the Government was also determined to celebrate success.

"Last year, the Government was criticised for `naming and shaming' 18 failing schools. We said that where we found failure, we would be open about it and support schools in any way we could.

"We also said we would celebrate success. Today we are doing just that, and getting a chance to hear at first hand how true grit, determination, vision and sheer hard work can pull a school back from the brink and set it on the road to recovery.

"These schools show what can be done. They are from inner city and rural areas, including some deprived areas where many pupils have English as a second language and take free school meals.

"They challenge the myth that poverty is an excuse for failure. Those who write off these children as failures do so at their peril. We certainly will not do it. They want our support, not sympathy. Today we name and acclaim them."

The schools represented at Tuesday's reception were:
