Complex pattern of student choice
Imperial College scene
More people want to be students at Imperial College
There have been big variations in the fortunes of different higher education institutions in attracting students.

Overall there was a fall in numbers nationally - but some places are up in popularity, to a greater or lesser extent, and some are down.

It is hard to discern clear patterns.

The Universities and Colleges Admissions service released figures for total applications received by the 15 January deadline.

The University of Bolton - awarded university status less than two years ago - had seen interest rise 50% but from a small base. It had 4,882 applications.

Leeds Metropolitan University - highly unusual in setting fees at 2,000 a year rather than the maximum permitted 3,000 - saw an 8.3% gain.

Biggest fallers

But then Liverpool Hope University - which is charging 3,000 - has an increase of 11.6%.

Imperial College, London - whose rector has long argued for far higher fees - has seen applications rise 8.1%.

London institutions generally appear better off. The biggest rise among more established institutions of any size was 17.7% at Soas - the School of Oriental and African Studies.

At the other end of the scale, Hull York Medical School suffers a 39% decline.

At Nottingham Trent University the fall was 18.3% and at the University of Nottingham - part of the elite Russell Group - it was 14.2%.

The University of Reading's applications were down 17.3%.

The table below shows institutions with at least 1,000 applications and the change compared with last year.
