Schools closed following blasts

The blasts caused enormous disruption
Many state schools in central London are closed following terrorist attacks on public transport.

All schools in Westminster and Camden are shut after it was decided staff and pupils might have problems getting in.

In Islington, about one third of primary schools and two thirds of secondary schools are closed.

In Southwark, individual head teachers have been allowed to decide, while all schools remain open in Brent and just one is closed in Tower Hamlets.

'Call first'

A spokesman for the Association of London Government , which represents councils, said: "The best thing people can do is phone the school or their local education authority before going in."

Councils received many calls on Thursday from worried parents and partners of school staff.

Businesses were asked to pay particular attention to schoolchildren out doing work experience placements.

University terms are over but there are still thousands of students in London and universities have been taking steps to let them contact anxious relatives.
