Education: News In Brief Wednesday, September 22, 1999 Published at 15:29 GMT 16:29 UK Compulsory maths causes walk-out The introduction of maths as a compulsory subject in the Romanian school curriculum has sparked a walk-out by pupils. Hundreds of pupils walked out of lessons and protested outside government offices, carrying banners with slogans such as "We want justice, not maths exams". As part of the introduction of a more Western curriculum, the Romanian education authorities have made maths compulsory, with a pass in the subject necessary to gain a baccalaureat-style qualification. The anti-maths protestors were believed to be students in their final year of high school who believe that their current workload is heavy enough without an additional exam in maths. |
