The week-long strike, which began on the day that schools were meant to re-open, was settled after union leaders agreed to a 1.9% wage increase and extra money for supervising school trips. The government had previously offered 1.5%. Industrial action by other public sector workers in Israel had been settled by Monday, with the teachers' dispute continuing for another night of negotiations. The government had argued that the country's economic achievements could be jeapordised by large pay rises in the public sector. The Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, had appealed for restraint from striking teachers and as a gesture of good faith had promised to freeze the salaries of senior officials, including his own. The end of the dispute will mean the end of childcare problems facing the families of the 1.5 million children kept from school by the strike. |
