Bullying helpline kept open by government

Children who are concerned about bullying can phone for help

The Scottish Office is to pay for a bullying helpline run by the children's charity ChildLine.

The Scottish Schools Minister, Brian Wilson, has intervened to protect the helpline, funding for which was due to run out at the end of this month.

"Our decision to pay for the helpline confirms our commitment to tackling the problem of bullying," the minister said.

"We will not tolerate bullying of children. I am delighted to provide up to £34,000 this financial year to keep the bullying helpline open. Bullying is a serious matter and must be addressed quickly and firmly whenever it arises."

"Bullying is not acceptable behaviour. No child should fear going to school and no child should suffer in silence."

In Scotland, callers to the children's helpline run by ChildLine have been more concerned with bullying than any other subject. To help these children a separate support line for the victims of bullying in Scotland was set up in January, with temporary funding.

Now the Scottish Office has given its financial approval for the continuation of the helpline, saying that "ChildLine Scotland is a vital link for children who need help".

The helpline, free to callers, is open on weekdays between 3.30pm and 9.30pm and offers confidential advice to children and young people with anxieties about bullying.

The number for bullying in Scotland is 0800 441111 and the general ChildLine number is 0800 1111.
