Security tightens ahead of Leeds match
![]() Tributes were laid at Elland Road for the two murdered supporters
A huge police operation will take place ahead of Leeds United's Champions League match against Turkish club Besiktas on Tuesday.
Extra stewards have been drafted in at the Elland Road stadium to prevent any trouble between the opposing sets of fans. In April two Leeds fans were stabbed to death during a Uefa cup tie against another Turkish club, Galatasaray, in Istanbul. A flight chartered by Besiktas' fans to take 500 supporters to the match in Leeds has had to be cancelled because only 70 wanted to come.
Pre-match hospitality has also been cancelled. Besiktas chairman Serdar Bilgili agreed that the clubs were on a good footing. "I think there is a great friendship and everything is, I believe, restored. We have seen no problems," he told BBC News 24. Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were stabbed to death in violent clashes with Galatasaray fans before last season's Uefa Cup semi-final first leg match in Istanbul. Uefa officials decided the semi-final match should still go ahead after a late-night meeting with police chiefs.
But they say they are more than ready to deal with any trouble makers who may be targeting the game. Chief Supt George Robinson told BBC News 24: "We must make sure that people are safe. "Anybody that might decide to come to cause trouble who are not genuine fans, we are in a position to deal with them." |
