It has been one of the coldest winters in the UK on record, with snow falling metres thick across the Scottish Highlands: ideal circumstances for avalanches which can sweep climbers and skiers away in an instant.
But how do you find someone buried in an avalanche?
To find out, Nick Higham joined the volunteers of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue team and spoke to the team's instructor, David Rutledge, and the deputy leader, Simon Steer.
