Sharon Shoesmith, former head of children's services at Haringey Council, is fighting her dismissal after the controversy surrounding the death of Baby P.
Her lawyers are claiming that documents in a damning Ofsted report were unfairly altered.
In an interview with the BBC, children's secretary Ed Balls says he acted upon "very serious failings" which were highlighted in the report.
He added that on the basis of everything he knows, if faced with the situation again he would make "exactly the same decision".
