Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has said Gordon Brown did not mean any offence after the mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan criticised a hand written letter of condolence the prime minister had sent her.

Gordon Brown apologised to Jacqui Janes after she said he had misspelt her surname and the spelling of the name of her son, Jamie.

Lord Mandelson said Gordon Brown "cares very deeply" for all those who have suffered bereavement.
