A scheme to give British troops free entry to sporting and music events has been launched. Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker launched the scheme with Victoria Cross-holder Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry and Tory leader David Cameron. Under the scheme, military personnel will be able to enter a ballot for free entry to football matches, cricket, the Olympics, concerts and other events. It was set up by the Tories, who say it will be run on a non-political basis. A number of football clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United, and music venues, including London's O2 arena, where the scheme was launched on Tuesday, have agreed to make complimentary tickets available. Servicemen and women, including veterans who have been medically discharged since 2001, will qualify for tickets under the scheme, which will be run by a not-for-profit company, independently of the Conservative Party. A £1 donation is requested for each ticket and all proceeds will be donated to charities. Boxing promoter Frank Warren is among the advisory board members and patrons include Gary Lineker, actress Joanna Lumley and singer Joss Stone. Mr Lineker, who visited British troops in Afghanistan in last month, said: "An important aspect for any person in the services is that they feel appreciated. "This is a small way to go to show them we really do care and respect their sacrifice for our country."
