Bid to fly replica triplane

Volunteers from Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry who built a replica of a fragile triplane, were crossing their fingers at the aircraft's launch.

The original plane was designed by the city's famous aviator, A V Roe and it flew 900ft (274m) at an average 20ft (6m) off the ground in 1909.

But the test flight of the replica at RAF Woodvale near Formby in Merseyside left spectators disappointed.
