In his first interview with the BBC since he became the head of the British Army, General Sir David Richards has said his soldiers are happy with the type of equipment that they have been issued with.

He also envisaged that it could take five years before the Army can move to a supporting role in Afghanistan.

Gen Richards, previously Commander-in-Chief Land Forces, replaced Gen Sir Richard Dannatt as Chief of the General Staff in August.
