Papers focus on BNP's appearance

Papers

The BNP leader Nick Griffin again hits the headlines as he prepares to make his debut on Question Time.

The Guardian highlights the BBC director general's defence of the decision to invite him on the programme.

The Times says it is up to the other panellists to expose his true nature.

Sun columnist Kelvin MacKenzie reckons it will be one of the "great TV political events" but Michael Rosen in the Independent attacks the decision to invite Mr Griffin to appear.

'Pointless strike'

Postal workers are facing criticism as they embark on two days of strikes. "First class folly" is the Daily Mail's verdict while the Daily Express says union claims it had been left with no alternative was "preposterous".

The Sun reckons the strike is one of the most pointless in recent history and the Daily Mirror urges the parties to get back to negotiations.

The Guardian says post workers have every right to strike as their lives have got significantly worse recently.

Independence questioned

The Times is among papers reporting the shadow business secretary Ken Clarke has scored a victory for MPs in the row about the audit of their expenses.

Sir Thomas Legg has apologised to Mr Clarke for an error and trimmed more than £3,000 from a repayment demand.

The Daily Telegraph takes the Director of Public Prosecutions to task for his attack on Tory plans to scrap the Human Rights Act.

The paper says Keir Starmer's comments calls into question his independence.

Fashion followers

The recession is having an impact on Britain's dinner tables, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

Pigs trotters and other cheaper meats like pork belly and faggots are back on the menu as people seek to economise.

But one luxury item is to become more affordable, reports the Daily Mail.

Followers of fashion will be delighted to learn that one of the most prized brands of footwear - a range of Jimmy Choos - is coming to one chain at High Street prices.
