After a brief summer respite, the
Independent
says, the cloud of MPs' expenses has returned once again. Political editor Andrew Grice says many Labour MPs are angry that Gordon Brown has told them to follow orders from Sir Thomas Legg, who investigated expenses. But the Daily Telegraph says events of the past week have illustrated the chasm between MPs' sense of entitlement and the public's sense of outrage. The Daily Mail says that least one MP is expected to be
prosecuted.
Last respects The tribute to the late Boyzone star Stephen Gately by the surviving members of the Irish group is the lead for the
Daily Mirror
and the
Sun.
Both the Guardian and the Independent report the furore over an
article
in the previous day's Daily Mail. The article by columnist Jan Moir had claimed that the death of Mr Gately, who was gay, was not "natural".
Charlie Brooker
in the Guardian accuses Ms Moir of dancing on Mr Gately's grave before he has even been buried. Free lunch The papers are intrigued that Tesco is replacing "buy one get one free" offers with "buy one get one free - later", in an effort to cut food waste. The
Daily Mail
says consumers will be able to postpone getting the second product until a later shopping trip. This would avoid having to throw away perishable items not eaten in time. According to the
Daily Telegraph,
shoppers will be given vouchers that last for months at a time so they can claim the free item when they want it. Piece of cake The papers show no sympathy for a school that banned a girl from sharing her birthday cake with other pupils because of healthy eating rules. The
Daily Express
says pupils at the school in Rotherham got a glimpse of Olivia Morris's cake as they sang Happy Birthday and she blew out her candles. Then the cake was put back in its tin and Olivia was told to take it home. The
Daily Mail
says staff told Olivia's mum birthday cakes were at odds with the school's healthy living message.
