Harrier video shows insurgent's escape

The Ministry of Defence has released video taken from a Harrier jet in Afghanistan which was targeting a suspected insurgent.

Filmed from the aircraft patrolling in Helmand province, the video shows a Paveway IV smart bomb locked on to a car driven by a local Taliban commander.

As the pilot saw the target seeking refuge in a populated area, he deliberately diverted the bomb to avoid hitting civilians.

A spokesman for the MoD said the pilot had been frustrated to lose the target but the risk of hitting civilians was too great.

The Taliban commander was tracked down and apprehended two days later.
