The re-emergence of the MPs' expenses story is in many of the Sunday papers. The
Sunday Telegraph reports that the expenses of almost half of all MPs
will come under further scrutiny when parliament reconvenes on Monday. A Whitehall source tells the paper that at least 325 MPs will be told either to repay money, or to provide further information about their claims The
Mail on Sunday says that about 50 of them
fear having to resign when the details are made public. The political coverage continues with an opinion poll in the
News of the World, which suggests the Conservatives have increased their lead over Labour.
The ICM poll of more than 1,000 people was conducted during the Tory party conference in Manchester. It puts the Conservatives on 45%, Labour on 26%, and the Liberal Democrats on 18%.
David Cameron's pledge that the Tories would tackle poverty and inequality was a gamble, says the Sunday Times.
Ashes coverage The
Mail on Sunday says there are demands for an investigation
after the BBC interviewed two members of the British National Party for a news item. The paper says that Radio 1's Newsbeat introduced the men as "young guys who are members of the BNP". But it says they are in fact senior officials in the party hierarchy, including its head of publicity. The paper quotes the programme's editor who says the BBC should examine all political parties. The
Sunday Telegraph says test cricket between England and Australia
will be making a return to terrestrial TV. The paper says the Ashes will join the list of so-called "crown jewels" which satellite broadcasters are not allowed to bid for. It follows complaints that viewers missed England's recent Ashes victory. And the People reports on how fans of Dad's Army have formed a replica Home Guard unit of their own in the village of Ingleton, Lancashire.
