Arrest over Jamaica consul murder

A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Jamaica in connection with the murder of British honorary consul John Terry.

Mr Terry was found beaten and strangled in the bedroom of his Montego Bay home on 9 September.

Jamaican police said they would interview the man and an identification parade would be held later this week.

Mr Terry, a father-of-two, reportedly separated from his wife three years ago. His job was to help British tourists who had got into trouble.

Hotel role

Police spokesman Karl Angell said: "The investigation is progressing well.

"Police are making arrangements to interview the suspect in the presence of an attorney and will conduct identification parades in the next few days."

Honorary consuls are volunteers who help British nationals and others for whom the UK government has consular responsibility abroad.

They receive no salary from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office but some are paid a small honorarium of around £2,000.

New Zealand-born Mr Terry had worked in the tourism industry for around 30 years and was made an MBE in 1992.

He was also the maintenance manager at a hotel in Montego Bay.
