Three Britons have been killed in a motorbike crash in northern Italy, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Colin Morrish, 63, and Wendy Pointer, 60, from Rochester, in Kent, and an unnamed 66-year-old man died on 22 September in the town of Mezzolombardo.

News agency Ansa said they were on two bikes which collided with a lorry. A fourth woman is in intensive care.

The accident was near a new tunnel which has a dual carriageway inside but switches to single lanes outside.

According to Italian government officials, the crash took place about 1900 local time as the motorcycles were exiting the tunnel.

A spokesman said: "Witnesses saw the two bikes on the wrong side of the road."

The two men died instantly and Ms Pointer was badly injured but later died, the reports said.

The woman in hospital, in the regional capital Trento, is the wife of the 66-year-old victim.

The lorry driver was also taken to hospital but was not thought to be seriously injured.

Relatives of the deceased were informed and are being offered consular assistance, the Foreign Office said.
