A Royal Marine has been killed in an explosion during a foot patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

He died near Gereshk in the early hours of Saturday. Next of kin have been informed.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lt Col Nick Richardson, said the marine had given his life for his country.

It brings the number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001 to 208.

Lt Col Richardson said: "This marine gave his life for his country and the freedom of the Afghan people; there is no greater sacrifice than this.

"Our deepest and heartfelt sympathies go to his family and loved ones."
