With high mountains in the north, and an empty desert in the south, the province that is home to British military operations in Afghanistan is a remote corner of the world.

But what is Helmand really like?

Author Bijan Omrani has written extensively about the region, and Frank Ledwidge served as justice adviser to the UK provincial reconstruction team in the town of Lashkar Gah during 2007. Take a tour with them.
