Calls for curbs on 'surveillance society'


The Liberal Democrats are calling for tighter controls on the surveillance powers of authorities.

Local councils, the police and some public bodies can ask for access to the phone and email details of people who are suspected of breaking the law.

More than 500,000 requests to view personal records were made in 2008. Helen Fawkes reports.
