Many of the papers are concerned about the Bank of England's move to inject a further £50bn into the economy. The Financial Times says the move has
raised fresh doubts about the the strength of the economic recovery.
The Daily Telegraph says the Bank admitted Britain was suffering
a deeper recession than previously feared.
The Guardian says the Bank is aware of the dangers of withdrawing the stimulus too early and
risking the economy tipping into a second downturn.
Biggs 'U-turn' The Daily Mail leads on
the release of Ronnie Biggs
from prison - describing it as his last escape. It says Justice Secretary Jack Straw performed an extraordinary U-turn on his release - a month after he ruled Biggs should die in jail. The Guardian says
Biggs has pneumonia, is unable to eat, speak or walk,
and communicates by pointing at letters. The Daily Express reports that doctors have told Biggs and his family there is little hope of recovery. The last Tommy Many of the papers cover the funeral of Harry Patch, the last British survivor of the trenches of World War I. The Independent says his funeral was all too
reminiscent of the funerals of those who have died in Afghanistan.
The Sun says the funeral could easily have taken place 92 years ago, when as a 19-year-old,
he was wounded by a shell at Passchendaele.
The paper contrasts his funeral with that of Rifleman Joe Murphy, 18, who was killed in a Taliban bomb attack. Beetroot boost The Times is one of a number of papers to highlight new research which
trumpets the powers of beetroot juice.
It says the drink boosts stamina, allowing people to endure strenuous physical exercise for longer. Researchers at Exeter University say they were amazed at the effects of the juice, and claim the findings will be of interest to all athletes. But they do point to one, albeit harmless, side-effect of drinking the juice - it turns people's urine red.
