The big profits for Barclays Bank and HSBC in their half-yearly results - and the prospect of a return to big bonuses - are the lead for most papers. The Financial Times highlights the effect the figures had on the financial markets, with the headline,
"Banks boost recovery hopes".
But the
Times,
the
Guardian,
the Independent
and the Daily Mirror focus on the banks' defence of bonuses. The Mirror says hard-working
Britons are being given a kick in the teeth.
'Astonishing income' The
issue of GPs' pay
is the Daily Mail's main story. An investigation by the paper has found what it calls the "astonishing" way their income has risen in recent years. Family doctors are paid more than £200 an hour for evenings and weekends, it says. This was work they did for free before new contracts were introduced. Via a Freedom of Information request, the paper found one GP earning £380,000 a year, with a number of others pocketing more than £300,000. Right-to-die rules The Daily Telegraph leads with a
disclosure by the Director of Public Prosecutions on assisted suicide.
He said new guidelines will apply to people who help loved ones die in the UK, as well as overseas. The paper says it had been assumed that Keir Starmer's rules would only affect the family of those wanting to die abroad. Meanwhile, the Guardian reports that
Gordon Brown is planning to spend a week doing community work,
as part of his month-long summer holiday. Furry delivery The arrival of a
new baby at a German Zoo
is celebrated in the Sun. The paper reports how 12-year-old gorilla Gana, who was pictured hugging her three-month-old dead son last year, has given birth to another baby. Gana carried Claudio's body around for days and then sank into a depression at Munster Zoo. But the mother now appears to have recovered and is taking good care of her new baby. A keeper said: "Both are doing great, They've bonded well."
