Tony Bennett: Wedding singer

Tony Bennett: In good heart in Manchester
A newly married couple were treated to an impromptu performance at their wedding reception by star crooner Tony Bennett.

The 73-year-old singer serenaded the couple with his signature tune, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, during their reception at the Midlands Hotel in Manchester on Sunday night.

The entertainer had just finished a sell-out show at the Palace Theatre and had returned to the hotel for the night when he was approached by the bride's mother.

She asked him if he would sing for her daughter as a special gift on her wedding night.

Moving performance

A spokeswoman for Mr Bennett said: "At first we didn't think he was going to do it, then just before he went to bed he got up and sang.

"The bride's mother was almost in tears and the bride and bridegroom were just cuddling and kissing and saying it was amazing."

She said wedding guests were delighted by the surprise performance, and they sang and clapped along to the tune.

A spokeswoman for the Midlands Hotel said: "The family had a great day and a fabulous time at the hotel."

The singer flew to France on Monday and will visit Germany, Spain, Holland and Denmark on his three-week European tour.
