The great train debate: Electric or Diesel?

The UK government is to announce a major plan to electrify key rail lines including the Great Western mainline.

As the BBC's Transport correspondent Tom Symonds explains, electric trains are considered more environmentally-friendly because they do not have to carry their fuel, have lighter engines, and better acceleration.

They also produce none of the local pollution associated with diesel engines.
