The Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson has outlined plans for a national pandemic flu service, offering advice and diagnosis via phones and the internet, to "relieve pressure on GPs and hospitals".
Speaking to the BBC's Fergus Walsh, Sir Liam also said he was "not surprised" at the latest jump in the UK's swine flu figures, despite the fact that they have exceeded epidemic levels in some parts of the country.
