Papers reflect on tower block blaze

Sunday papers

The Sunday Telegraph carries poignant pictures of some of those who died in a fire in a south London tower block.

Rafael Cervi, who lost his wife and three-year-old son, describes how he came home to find them trapped inside.

In the News of the World, he demands to know why it took firefighters more than two hours to reach the family.

The Sunday Times reports that a fashion designer who was among the victims was about to receive a marriage proposal from her boyfriend.

New hope

The Observer carries a demand from the government's spending watchdog for a pay freeze on public sector workers.

Audit Commission chief executive Steve Bundred attacks politicians for failing to admit "severe pay restraint" is necessary for the public finances.

The Sunday Express keeps the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in the public eye.

It says a young girl found alive after being kidnapped in Panama six years ago has given hope to Madeleine's parents.

Family picture

There is no shortage of stories about Michael Jackson, as his fans prepare for his memorial concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The Daily Star Sunday says the event is expected to attract a record audience of three billion people worldwide.

The News of the World is dominated by a picture of him with two of his children and a smiling ex-wife Debbie Rowe.

Under the headline "Happy Families", the paper says it could destroy claims she was just a surrogate.

New balls

After the disappointment of Andy Murray's exit from Wimbledon, the papers consider the next great sporting challenge of the summer.

A quick glance at the sports sections is a reminder cricket's Ashes series starts on Wednesday.

The Sunday Times assures its readers Australia's cricketers no longer have the aura of invincibility which they enjoyed for years.

"Get ready for a roller-coaster ride" is the Sunday Telegraph's advice.
