Swine flu cases in UK pass 2,000

The number of UK swine flu cases has passed 2,000, after 247 people in England were confirmed with the virus.

A total of 2,244 people have now been diagnosed with the virus since April, says the Health Protection Agency.

Most of the new cases - 112 - were in the West Midlands, with 77 new cases in London and 18 in the South East.

The new cases bring the total in England to 1,678. Figures for Scotland, where there were 549 confirmed cases on Friday, are released separately.

The new cases in England include 17 in the South West, eight in the North West, seven in the east Midlands, five in Yorkshire and Humber, two in the Eastern region and one in the North East.
