RSPCA Officer Kirsty Hampton said the scene at Spindle Farm, in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, was the most "horrific case of animal cruelty" she had seen.

Horse trader James Gray was found guilty at Bicester Magistrates' Court of 11 charges of animal neglect.

In January 2008, RSPCA officers raided the farm to discover more than 100 starving horses, ponies and donkeys.

Mark Worthington reports.
