Changing Cityscapes: Gateshead

Twenty years ago Gateshead's quayside was a derelict industrial wasteland.

Now it is home to The Sage, a boldly designed music centre which has already gained a worldwide reputation and put Gateshead on the cultural map.

More than £145m of private and public funding has been pumped into rebuilding the riverside.

As part of the BBC News Changing Cityscapes series, architect Spencer de Grey explains the design of the Sage Gateshead in this video.

Love it, or hate it, the building is certainly a bold statement about Gateshead's intended future.
