The UK's cities have changed dramatically in recent decades.

Every year, billions of pounds are spent on urban improvements including eye-catching new buildings, cultural centres, roads and other infrastructure.

But what is the lasting impact on our cityscapes?

Each day this week, BBC News is looking at five different cities and seeing how a project in each is playing its part in the transformation.

Once known for its canals and mills, Manchester has reinvented itself in recent decades as a dynamic city bustling with modern architecture.

In this video, DJ and writer Dave Haslam looks at how the city has changed and asks what the Beetham Tower, a lone skyscraper in a low-rise city, says about the kind of place Manchester wants to become.
