Scale of downturn comes as a 'surprise'

Business leaders are warning that the recession is likely to be deeper than the one in the early 1990s.

The British Chambers of Commerce said its latest quarterly survey has uncovered a "frightening deterioriation" in the economy.

A separate survey by retailers shows that sales were down over the Christmas period, making it the worst December in at least 14 years.
