Papers focus on Menezes inquest

Most of the papers cover the open verdict returned at the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes.

The Independent asks a range of questions relating to the day of the shooting and the inquest itself.

Its front-page bears the headline "Did the police lie?"

The Sun says there were "six fatal errors" which led to the shooting.

Cancer treatment

The Daily Express heralds what it describes as "the drug to prevent cancer", called Tamoxifen.

It is currently used in the treatment of breast cancer.

But a study suggests many women thought to have a high risk of developing the disease could use the drug to reduce the chances of it occurring.

Manchester may have rejected the idea of congestion charging, but the Daily Telegraph suggests the government is not giving up the idea of road pricing.

The story of four British Marines killed in Afghanistan makes it on to the front-page of the Daily Mirror.

It says the involvement of a boy barely into his teens is a "sickening new tactic" of the Taliban.

Christmas card

According to the Times, two SAS squadrons are to head to Afghanistan next year.

They are expected to undertake various operations against insurgents and opium smugglers, and should arrive as soon as their duties in Iraq are completed.

Gordon Brown has chosen what the Telegraph describes as "a traditional look" for his Christmas card.

It shows the famous black door bedecked in a red yuletide wreath.

The picture was apparently chosen because "the prime minister feels strongly that Christmas cards should be Christmassy".

The Independent says that the nation's skiers are sloping off to Eastern Europe as a result of the weak pound, which goes further over there.
