The Estate

The ideal housing estate?

The North Corner area of Devonport, Plymouth was once one of the most run-down areas of the city, with a reputation for crime and anti-social behaviour. It was a problem that needed a drastic solution. The answer was to tear it down and start again.

Rebuilt and now rebranded Gun Wharf, it's seen by many as a model estate.

Cyril Whittaker, of Devon and Cornwall Housing Association, says when it came to rebuilding the most important thing was to listen to the people who were going to live there.

For long-term residents Marjorie Richardson and Jackie Blight, the fact that Gun Wharf is now something of a tourist attraction is proof of its success.

Nicola Pearson reports.
