Market crash dominates headlines

Papers

The front pages of the day's newspapers are dominated by what the Daily Telegraph calls the "market mayhem".

As one City trader puts it: "Black Mondays used to be a once-a-decade event - now they're coming along more regularly than a London bus."

The Independent says the mood could be summed up in just one word - fear.

The Financial Times remarks that the sell-off came in spite of a frantic scramble by governments around the world to contain the crisis.

Action call

The plunge in the UK's share index is dubbed the "Monday Massacre" by a Daily Mirror headline.

The Sun sums up the London stock market's losses as the "£93bn Meltdown".

The Daily Express calls on Gordon Brown to take decisive action to save Britain from a slump, including a guarantee to savers and a cut in interest rates.

The Telegraph expects the Bank of England to make reductions in borrowing costs but says Chancellor Alistair Darling is reluctant to offer guarantees.

The response of Europe's leaders to the crisis is widely criticised.

"European Economic Confusion" is the verdict of the Times, remarking that President Sarkozy's summit in Paris produced little but pantomime.

Biker blues

The Daily Mail says the so-called united European front descended into a shambles as several countries shored up their own tottering banking systems.

The Telegraph and the Guardian report on a suspected darker side to the legendary American motorcycle stuntman, Evel Knievel.

FBI files released after his death reveal he was suspected of links to organised crime and a series of beatings in the 1970s.

Actor Sir Roger Moore, who played James Bond, is seen in the Mail and the Express with some of the actresses who also starred in the popular movies.

They were marking the centenary of the birth of Bond's creator, Ian Fleming.
