Eco-town protesters holding demo

Motorists have been warned to expect long delays as protesters against plans for an eco-town prepare to march along one of Bedfordshire's busiest roads.

Up to 500 people are expected to set off on Saturday from Marston Moretaine village hall, march along Bedford Road before turning east on to the A421.

They will then head towards the M1 before turning back.

The protesters are angry at the prospect of 15,000 new homes being built in Marston Vale.

Police will set up a rolling roadblock from 1030 BST that will start on the A421 at Marsh Leys roundabout and travel at 10mph on the eastbound carriageway as far as the Little Chef roundabout.

Bedfordshire Police said tailbacks could remain as far back as Bedford bypass, around the Interchange retail estate and past police headquarters.

Sgt Nigel Denham said: "This is a perfectly legal march and our role will be to ensure it goes as safely and smoothly as possible for both protesters and motorists. However, we want drivers to be aware so they can avoid the area completely or anticipate being delayed."

Final approval will not be given to up to 10 eco-towns planned across England until early 2009 - three months later than originally forecast.
