Details have emerged of a solo effort by a British amateur diplomat to broker a WWII peace deal.

Papers from MI5's archives reveal Old Etonian James Lonsdale-Bryans travelled to Rome to meet German diplomat Ulrich von Hassell.

He proposed to him that Germany could have a "free hand" in Europe while Britain ran the rest of the world.

Gordon Corera reports.
