Presidential hopeful Barack Obama's visit to the UK was the last part of the European leg of his foreign tour.
Senator Obama spoke to Prime Minister Gordon Brown for about two hours, and later said the pair had a "terrific" conversation.
After speaking to Mr Brown, the presidential hopeful told the media he had no advice for the prime minister, although he said people tend to be more popular before they gain power than afterwards.
Mr Obama and Mr Brown enjoyed a short walkabout near Horse Guards Parade, but the Illinois senator said their stroll had been curtailed by security staff.
Mr Obama, who was accompanied by a large cohort of aides, security staff and US press, took questions from the media in Downing Street.
A large gathering of people assembled outside the Houses of Parliament in the hope of seeing the presidential candidate.
After his meeting with the prime minister, Mr Obama met David Cameron and spent an hour talking to the Conservative leader.
Mr Obama's campaign aircraft was heavily guarded at Heathrow airport as the presidential candidate prepared to leave the UK.
