More time to quiz terror suspects

Police are searching premises at the university and in the city

Detectives have been granted more time to question two men arrested at the University of Nottingham campus under the Terrorism Act.

The men, aged 30 and 22, were arrested on Wednesday. One is reported to be a student and the other a former student.

Police can now hold the men until 20 May. Officers are continuing to search a number of premises in the city.

The arrests came in a joint operation between Nottinghamshire Police and the Midlands counter-terrorist unit.

'Low-key'

Supt Simon Nickless of Nottinghamshire Police said officers were working with community representatives, staff and students at the university to offer support and reassurance to those affected.

He said the operation has been "low-key" and the community's response to it had been "calm and rational".

A spokeswoman for the university said the institution had been "co-operating fully from the outset" of the investigation and that police had stressed there was "no risk to the university community or to the wider public".

"We accept that this sort of police operation is necessary and reasonable for the welfare of communities," she added.
