Duchess 'plans UK fat campaign'

Duchess of York
The Duchess said she wanted to share her health and fitness regime

The Duchess of York wants to return to the UK as a campaigner for healthy eating, after spending six months with a family on benefits for a documentary.

Prince Andrew's ex-wife has spent the last 12 years living mostly in the US.

But Sarah Ferguson says she hopes to launch a UK media career in order to "share some of the knowledge that I have gleaned over the last 15 years".

She said she had sub-let her New York flat and planned to spend "more and more" time at her Surrey home.

The Duchess, who herself has battled weight problems, has been a spokeswoman for WeightWatchers in the US for more than a decade.

"I would love to do more work in this country to just share some of the knowledge that I have gleaned over the last 15 years - how I'm still standing really, and what do I do with my health and fitness regime," she told a news conference.

"Not just that, but how do I stand up in front of millions of people and talk about what it's like to go through the adversity of life and be smiling and be happy.

"I would love to share that, and if I can I would love to do it - and perhaps also support Britain. I love Britain."

During her on-and-off stay with the Sargerson family, as part of the ITV1 documentary, the Duchess of York slept in a £40-a-night bed-and-breakfast in Hull.

After making the two-part documentary on obesity and eating, the Duchess said Britain was eating itself "to death".

The series starts on 19 May.
