Airliner bomb suspects 'bugged'

The accused men
The group of eight deny conspiring to blow up aircraft

Alleged conversations between members of a suspected terror cell about a plot to blow up transatlantic airliners in mid-flight have been played to a jury.

Security services bugged a flat in Walthamstow, east London, to pick up discussions about airport terminals, Woolwich Crown Court heard.

One extract contained references to popular British holiday destinations, including Miami and California.

Eight men deny conspiring to murder and endangering planes in August 2006.

It is claimed they planned to make hydrogen peroxide bombs disguised as soft drinks to detonate in mid-air on at least seven passenger planes flying out of Heathrow Airport.

Bomb-making ingredients

The alleged exchanges were picked up by an undercover recording device planted in the top-floor flat in Walthamstow, which prosecutors say was used as a bomb factory in July 2006.

Prosecutor Peter Wright QC read out passages from a transcript.

In one alleged conversation, a reference is made to Tang, a sugary powdered drink, which is claimed to have been a bomb-making ingredient.

One voice is heard to say: "You know the Tang, yeah?"

Another replies: "Uh, it's probably neither of those into it, so I thought... dissolved. So if I make them misty, now it's all clear."

In another extract, another man says: "Hope that we can at least do a decent job." Another replies: "My very position, bruv."

There is also mention made of testing things, with repeated reference to batteries, and the recording picks up an apparent drilling sound.

In another discussion, one male voice is heard to say: "The 10 most popular - place what people, British of eh? - holidays that people are going and what.

"Miami, California (beaches innit) Los Angeles - that's California anyway."

The defendants are Assad Sarwar, 24, of High Wycombe, Bucks, Tanvir Hussain, 27, of Leyton, east London, and Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 27, Waheed Zaman, 23, and Arafat Waheed Khan, 26, all of Walthamstow, east London.

Also charged are Mohammed Gulzar, 26, of Barking, east London, Ibrahim Savant, 27, of Stoke Newington, north London, and Umar Islam, 29, of Plaistow, east London.

The trial continues.
