Papers cover housing market slump

Papers

Problems with the economy and its subsequent effects dominate many of the day's newspaper headlines.

The Guardian and the Financial Times both report confidence in the housing market has slumped to a 30-year low.

This, they say, is largely because of the growing difficulties people are facing in getting a mortgage.

The FT says that, when bankers have a meeting with the prime minister, they will urge him to take urgent action to ease the squeeze on credit.

Parents' sorrow

The Sun leads with the news that the Royal Marine described by Prince Harry as a hero during a flight back from Afghanistan has contracted MRSA.

The Daily Mirror is one of several papers with front page pictures of the grieving parents of Indira Swann.

She is the youngest of the British women killed in an accident in Ecuador.

The paper reveals that, in a last e-mail home, the 18-year-old student thanked her mother and father for giving her the opportunity to travel.

The Daily Telegraph says that Tesco is planning to launch its own music and film download service.

Against the backdrop of a smouldering rainforest, the Independent poses what it describes as the "burning question".

The paper wants to know why the government is promoting biofuels, which it says devastates huge swathes of the world's environment.

Trump that

And Labour backbenchers are now openly questioning Mr Brown's leadership, according to the Daily Mail.

Never one to do things simply, Ivana Trump seems to have surpassed herself with her fourth wedding ceremony.

According to the Mail, the happy couple were attended by 25 bridesmaids, an equal number of groomsmen and serenaded by a 25-piece orchestra.

All the back pages focus on the late, late equaliser by Wigan's Emile Heskey, which put a serious dent in Chelsea's hopes of catching Manchester United.

The Daily Express scores the best headline: "Blues make Emile of it".
