A British soldier has been killed after stepping on a landmine in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The soldier, from the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, died on Sunday. Next of kin have been informed.

A second soldier was also hurt in the incident which took place during a foot patrol in Helmand province, but his injuries are not life threatening.

The number killed in operations in Afghanistan since 2001 stands at 88.

The soldiers had been on patrol with 40 Commando Royal Marines near Kajaki just before 0900 local time when the landmine exploded.
