UK hit by floods again
A wide area of the UK has been hit by the January floods, with residents and emergency services in many more places on alert as further strong winds and heavy rain are forecast.

At 1115 GMT there were 58 flood warnings and 109 flood watches in place.


  • Grimsby, Bilton and Burton Pidsea - fire crews called to homes overnight Tuesday; Owston and Immingham on Wednesday
  • Flood warnings for Rivers Ouse, Don and Dearne
  • Vehicle stuck in floods near Beverley, East Yorks
  • Tidal gate closed on River Humber at Burstwick Clough, near Hull, and 180 families on high alert for flooding
  • Flooded roads include the A15 at Folkingham, the A631 at Market Rasen, and the B1195 in the Horncastle area of Lincolnshire


  • Flood barrier put in place in Ironbridge in anticipation of a peak flow along the River Severn on Thursday


  • Part of A617 at Newark closed because of flooding
  • Travellers advised to move to higher ground as levels continue to rise along the River Trent

  • Some 3,000 homes around Oxford on high alert after a flood warning for the River Thames

East/West Sussex

  • Woman and three children rescued from flood-hit car in Lodsworth, near Petworth
  • Six people led to safety in Arundel
  • Fire service called to about 250 flooding incidents in Haywards Heath, Henfield and Crawley areas
  • Severe delays to London-Brighton trains
  • Surface water caused disruption on A23, M23 and A27
  • Train delays after tree falls on line near Polegate
  • Several local roads impassable after almost two-thirds of the rainfall expected for the whole of January fell in the South East in 24 hours


  • Flooding in Canterbury Cathedral
  • Dover sea crossings resumed on Wednesday after cancellations caused by strong winds
