BBC News online has been recognised as offering the best service of its kind in awards handed out by the UK multimedia industry on Monday.
It won the Consumer Information Service category at the 14th annual awards of the British Interactive Multimedia Association (BIMA), the trade body of the industry.
Speaking at the BIMA awards dinner at the London Hilton on Park Lane, BBC News online Project Director Bob Eggington said it was a proud moment for everyone working on the site.
"We've come a long way in a very short time," he said. "From a standing start, we're now achieving more than eight million page views a month and adding new features for the public all the time. It is a tremendous achievement by the team."
It is the second major accolade received by BBC News online this month. On March 5, it was highly commended in the Online News Service Award section at the 1998 British Press Awards.
The BBC's 24-hour news service for the Net was launched in November. It currently employs more than 50 journalists as well as designers, programmers and network personnel. In addition to text and pictures it offers substantial amounts of audio and video of news events and programmes, often streamed live.
The BIMA awards celebrate excellence in the design, production and delivery of interactive multimedia, on disk and online.
