Shock and grief over Bhutto death
Friends, family and supporters in the UK have been paying tribute to the Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, killed in a suicide attack at an election rally in Pakistan.

ASIM BHUTTO, MS BHUTTO'S COUSIN

They [her family] could not believe that a woman who worked so much for the country - she lost her whole family for the country - and after ages of exile, she has gone back into the country to bring peace and freedom...

In return, she gets shot and assassinated, so we are shocked and devastated.

BISHOP OF ROCHESTER, MICHAEL NAZIR-ALI

Benazir Bhutto has been a personal friend for many years. Her murder by extremists is a body blow for freedom and democracy in Pakistan.

I do hope that general elections can still be held and that the cause of democracy can survive this catastrophe.

She will always be remembered for her commitment to Pakistan and her courage in public life.

TAIMUR RAHMAN, NATIONAL UNION OF PAKISTANI STUDENTS AND ALUMNI

Right now, I think people are overwhelmed with grief and this grief is going to turn to anger.

I think this is an unprecedented national tragedy and I think there is just no telling which way this is going to turn now.

This will strike people as an attempt to deny them representation. This could lead to an enormous increase in the level of violence in Pakistan.

AMIT ROY, COMMENTATOR ON PAKISTANI POLITICS

In one of my last conversations with her I said, almost as a joke, that she should leave politics and become an academic.

But she felt that it was always her ambition to return to Pakistan as prime minister. She knew the risks but was determined to stay.

DR FRANCES LANNON, PRINCIPAL OF LADY MARGARET HALL, OXFORD UNIVERSITY, WHERE MS BHUTTO STUDIED

We admired her bravery and her determination to play a positive role supporting democratic values in Pakistan.

While most of the tutors who taught here when she studied here have retired now, I do know that she was highly regarded as an intelligent student who made many friends here.

CLEO ROCOS, COMEDY ACTRESS AND FRIEND OF MS BHUTTO

She was truly passionate. There was nothing phoney about her. She believed passionately that her country should be improved by education for all and improved rights for women.

She was a fantastic mother. I don't know how she balanced things, but she did. She was just a normal mother, cooking in the kitchen.

She had an enormous sense of humour, completely eloquent and witty. She was compelling to be with.
