Diana inquest: The Dodi letters

Diana letter

Two intimate letters from Princess Diana to her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed have been revealed at the inquest into their deaths.

The letters were written in the month before the couple were killed in a car crash in a Paris road tunnel in August 1997.

They were presented to the High Court in London by Michael Mansfield QC who is representing the father of Mr Al Fayed, Mohamed Al Fayed.

In bringing the letters before the court, Mr Mansfield was trying to show that Diana and Dodi Al Fayed's relationship was serious.

Harrods owner Mr Al Fayed has claimed there was a plot involving the Duke of Edinburgh to murder Diana and his son before they could get married.

The previous day, Diana's close friend and confidante Rosa Monckton had indicated to the inquest jury that the couple's bond was not so strong.

The first of the letters, which are handwritten on Kensington Palace headed notepaper, is dated 6 August.

It concerns a six-day holiday Diana spent on Dodi Al Fayed's yacht, the Jonikal.

The princess describes it as "the most magical six days on the ocean waves".

She says she adored it all and that the combination of laughter and happiness was a "serious treat".

The second letter, dated 13 August, describes cufflinks which belonged to her late father, Earl Spencer, and which she was passing on to her boyfriend.

She said he would be happy that they were in "such safe and special hands".
