Child-trafficking guidance issued

Trafficked children are used in witchcraft and the sex industry
Guidance to raise awareness of child trafficking, including of UK children, has been issued by the government.

The campaign aims to show police, border staff and health workers the warning signs to look out for.

Border staff are urged to look for indicators such as children who cannot confirm who is meeting them, or who have a mobile phone but no money.

The government said the trade was "abhorrent" and that it was everyone's responsibility to look out for it.

It is the first time the information has been laid out in this way, said the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Home Office, who have provided the guidelines.

Abused and subdued

Children's Minister Kevin Brennan said: "Child trafficking is completely abhorrent.

"Many trafficked children are too frightened to come forward, so it's vital that both professionals and the public are aware of this issue and know how they can raise the alarm."

The government said there are a range of ways children are abused and subdued by traffickers.

These include threatening them with witchcraft, beating them up, and getting them hooked on drugs.

The government urged anyone working with children to be extra vigilant and to call police or NSPCC helplines if they have any suspicions.
